Weight loss Surgery Kenya

Lose Up to 80% of Excess Weight with Weight loss surgery Kenya

Weight loss surgery, also called bariatric surgery, is the most effective long-term treatment for severe obesity and related health conditions. At Nairobi Bariatric Center, we offer two gold-standard surgical options – Gastric Sleeve and Gastric Bypass – performed by expert surgeons in a safe, supportive environment.

These procedures can help you lose 60–80% of excess weight, improve or reverse conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea, and give you a new lease on life.

How Weight Loss Surgery Works

Weight loss surgery works by changing your stomach’s size and sometimes rerouting your intestines to:

  • Restrict food intake – You feel full after eating less.
  • Reduce hunger – Hormonal changes lower appetite.
  • Improve metabolism – Especially with gastric bypass, which alters gut hormones for better blood sugar control.

At NBC, all surgeries are performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery), meaning smaller cuts, faster recovery, and minimal scarring.

How does the Gastric Bypass work?

Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y)
This procedure creates a small stomach pouch and reroutes part of the small intestine, restricting food intake and reducing nutrient absorption. It often results in 60–80% excess weight loss in 12–18 months. It is especially effective for patients with severe type 2 diabetes, acid reflux, or higher BMI.

How does the Gastric Sleeve work?

Gastric Sleeve (Sleeve Gastrectomy)
This procedure removes about 70–80% of the stomach, reducing its size and lowering levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin. Patients typically lose 60–70% of their excess body weight within 12–18 months. It is ideal for people who want significant weight loss without intestinal rerouting.

Who Qualifies for Weight Loss Surgery

You may be eligible for weight loss surgery if:

  • Your BMI is 40 or above
  • Your BMI is 35 or above and you have obesity-related health conditions like type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure
  • You have tried other weight loss methods without lasting success
  • You are committed to making permanent lifestyle changes

People who are not yet ready to commit to dietary changes, follow-up visits, or supplementation may need to delay surgery until they are fully prepared.

Benefits of Weight loss Surgery

  • Remission of type 2 diabetes in many patients, often within weeks after surgery
  • Significant reduction in hypertension and improvement in cholesterol levels
  • Relief from sleep apnea and other breathing problems
  • Increased energy, mobility, and ability to exercise
  • Improved fertility in women with obesity-related hormonal issues
  • Better mental health, confidence, and quality of life

Risks, Side Effects, and How NBC Minimizes Them

As with any surgery, there are potential risks including bleeding, infection, blood clots, and nutrient deficiencies. NBC minimizes these risks through experienced surgeons, comprehensive pre-op assessments, strict surgical safety protocols, and lifelong follow-up care. Patients receive guidance on diet, supplementation, and activity to maintain their health after surgery.

Frequently asked questions

Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery is suitable for:

  • Female patients with a BMI higher than 35
  • Male patients with a BMI higher than 34
  • Patients with diabetes mellitus and a BMI higher than 30
  • Let us know if your BMI is lower than those mentioned above, but you have recently lost weight. Your previous weight will be considered when approving you for surgery.

If your BMI is lower than 30, but you are not comfortable with your weight, there are options. If you have tried different weight loss methods but nothing seems to work, we offer our unique course of “Psychological Correction of Eating Habits” that helps you to address psychological factors as well as your nutrition and eating behavior. In addition, you can opt for gastric balloon procedure, which is a bariatric surgery alternative. A soft expandable silicone balloon is inserted into the stomach through the mouth and filled with sterile water to take up space in your stomach. The balloon creates a feeling of fullness and you are satisfied after eating smaller amounts of food as you are used to. It helps in controlling your hunger as well as reduce your portion sizes, which leads to consumption of fewer calories, making you lose weight.

When it comes to weight loss surgery, no BMI is too high. The main goal of the procedures we offer is to help patients achieve a healthy weight. However, please note that if your BMI is higher than 50, the surgeon will ask you to lose more weight before the surgery than what is required for patients with a lower BMI.

When you get a gastroscopy, the doctor checks your stomach for diaphragmatic esophageal hernia, which may lead to reflux after surgery. If a hernia is found, it is repaired during the gastric bypass procedure.

We recommend that our patients consult their personal doctors before leaving for treatment. Most doctors are aware of the main concerns of medical travel, so patients would greatly benefit from their advice and critical summary of your personal case.

To reserve a date for surgery, we ask our patients to transfer us a small deposit. The balance is paid at our clinic after your consultation with the surgeon. we accept payment by Bank Transfer (RTGS), cheque, MPESA, or cash, but not through card payments. Patients must prepare ahead of time to ensure payments are made by the deadlines to ensure their surgery goes ahead.

Some banks have specific policies about making transactions in foreign countries. If you plan on paying with your debit or credit card, please contact your bank to make any necessary adjustments, including increasing your payment card limit if necessary.
