World Cancer Day; The Often Overlooked Role of Weight Loss.

By Njeri Kubania

Every year on February 4th, the world comes together to raise awareness about cancer, its prevention, and the importance of early detection. World Cancer Day isn’t just about highlighting the problem—it’s about empowering people with knowledge and solutions. And one crucial but often overlooked factor? You guessed it; Weight management!

The Obesity-Cancer Connection

Did you know that obesity is linked to at least 13 types of cancer, including breast, colon, and endometrial cancer? Excess body fat leads to chronic inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and insulin resistance—all of which can increase the risk of cancer growth. Simply put, carrying extra weight isn’t just about appearance; it’s a serious health concern.

How Bariatric Surgery & Weight Loss Can Reduce Cancer Risk

For individuals struggling with severe obesity, bariatric surgery has been a game-changer—not just for weight loss, but for overall health as studies show that bariatric surgery can reduce cancer risk . How? Well, I’m glad you asked! Significant weight loss helps:

  • Lower Chronic Inflammation – Excess fat tissue triggers the release of inflammatory compounds that can promote cancer cell growth. Losing weight reduces inflammation levels, creating a healthier internal environment.
  • Regulate Hormones – Obesity leads to higher levels of insulin and estrogen, both of which are linked to increased cancer risk. Weight loss helps restore hormonal balance, reducing the stimulation of cancer cell growth.
  • Reduce Insulin Resistance – High insulin levels have been associated with several cancers. Weight loss improves insulin sensitivity, decreasing the risk of cancer development.
  • Enhance Gut Health – A healthy weight is associated with a balanced gut microbiome, which plays a crucial role in reducing inflammation and supporting overall well-being.

Losing weight through surgery or structured weight management programs doesn’t just transform your body—it can lower your chances of developing cancer.

Preventive Measures: Small Steps, Big Impact

Even if you’re not considering surgery, there are lifestyle changes that can help lower your cancer risk:

  • Nutrition Matters – A diet rich in fiber, lean protein, and antioxidants supports a healthy body and reduces inflammation. Swap processed foods for whole foods!
  • Stay Active – Aim for at least 150 minutes of exercise per week. It doesn’t have to be intense—walking, swimming, or yoga all count!
  • Avoid Risk Factors – Limit alcohol, quit smoking, and reduce processed sugar intake to keep your body in top shape.

The Silver Lining: You’re in Control

While cancer can feel like an overwhelming topic, the good news is that you have more power over your health than you think. Managing your weight, making small, sustainable lifestyle changes, and seeking the right medical support can significantly reduce your risk.

This World Cancer Day, let’s move beyond awareness and take action. Whether it’s through bariatric surgery, better nutrition, or simply prioritising movement, every step counts.
