Body Positivity Versus Healthy Weight; The Age Old Debate.

By Njeri Kubania

First things first, Happy International Women’s Day! This year, we celebrate the theme,”Inspiring Inclusion” and there is really no better day to delve into the delicate balance between body positivity and maintaining a healthy weight.

Inspiring inclusion calls us to embrace diversity and cultivate a sense of belonging that I believe goes beyond boardrooms and community spaces. It reaches into the very core of our individual experiences as women, navigating the intricate terrain of diverse body types in a society where unsolicited opinions and advice on our bodies and weight are rampant. In the realm of women’s well-being , itcalls for a celebration of diverse body types, acknowledging that beauty goes beyond conventional standards.

Body positivity is a key aspect that encourages women to embrace their bodies irrespective of societal norms or expectations. It entails recognising and appreciating the uniqueness of our individual forms whilst celebrating the strength and resilience that our bodies exhibit daily. However, this celebration should not overshadow the crucial importance of optimal health, an integral component of feeling and looking our best. After all, we cannot “stand on business” with achy joints, now can we?

Excess weight carries a multitude of potential health problems. Research indicates that obesity is linked to heightened risks of metabolic issues, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, and certain cancers. It has also been correlated with an increased prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders, significantly impacting our mental health. Additionally, it may cause disturbances in our reproductive hormones, potentially leading to PCOS, a struggle for a lot of women currently. Considering these health implications, it becomes clear that maintaining a healthy weight is intertwined with overall well-being and we really cannot afford to embrace one, without the other.

As a society, our focus should shift towards cultivating habits that promote physical and mental well-being, making regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and mental health practices the norm. This shift in perspective will empower women to embrace their bodies while actively contributing to their overall health and longevity, fostering an environment where every woman feels seen and valued. It is imperative that we dispel the misconception that a healthy weight aligns with a specific size or shape as I believe that both perspectives; body positivity and health consciousness, can harmoniously coexist.

Conclusion

By nurturing a culture that embraces diversity in body size while championing healthy lifestyles, we ensure that women from all walks of life are included in the empowering narrative. The delicate balance between body positivity and healthy weight should be a collective endeavor in the journey towards inspiring inclusion. Through this, we create a world where every woman, regardless of her body shape or size, is celebrated, accepted, and included in the journey toward holistic health and empowerment.
